Maximize The Potential of Your Team
Your managers excel at driving results, but there is a gap in their ability to lead and inspire their teams. What can you do about it?
Our top three recommendations for managers to inspire and engage their teams:
Inspire Purpose: Identify team and individual goals that align directly with your organization’s vision and strategic objectives, providing the meaning behind the work every team member craves.
Coach More, Tell Less: Strike a balance between directing and coaching when working with team members to enrich relationships and promote growth.
Employ Radical Humanity: Identify team and individual goals that align directly with your organization’s vision and strategic objectives, providing the meaning behind the work every team member craves.
How do you upskill your managers in a meaningful way?
From years of behavioral research and experience in developing talent, here’s our top piece of advice:
Focus on Business Impact First
Sounds simple, right? But what does this actually entail?
Let’s look at the traditional model. Well-meaning, you might decide that all managers need to learn to coach more effectively. You identify who needs to improve in this area, organize a workshop, and even bring in an expert.
However, what often happens? You might achieve 80% attendance at your workshop, engage managers during the session, and encourage some to take away valuable insights. Yet, the reality is that few actually implement these techniques in their daily work. You might receive positive feedback, but then the inevitable question arises: so what?
The method of upskilling is just as crucial as the content itself. It’s imperative that your training connects directly to specific leadership outcomes and business impacts. Otherwise, what’s the point?
Our Recommendation
Stop merely pushing skills or competencies. Instead, concentrate on the business impact—the challenges or opportunities a manager faces. For instance, they might say:
- “I need my team to deliver a significant feature quickly, but I’m unsure we can meet the deadline.”
- “We’re struggling with low engagement; how can I boost morale and productivity?”
Since each challenge is unique, deliver a hyper-personalized upskilling experience tailored to address that specific issue. Ultimately, you can measure the results:
- “My team delivered on time!”
- “Our productivity has soared, and morale is higher than ever!”
And, yes, the manager has also learned how to coach more and tell less through the process.
In the Learning & Development sphere, we’re often sidelined and treated as a discretionary expense. The answer? Prioritize business impact.
“After years in management, I finally had the epiphany! Management is much more than getting great work out the door. It is about accelerating the growth of each team member!”
MEET Reddy: Engineering Manager, 13 years experience
“My team is full of potential, yet here I am, swamped in endless review and revision cycles! It’s exhausting to feel like I’m carrying the weight of our projects alone. I need my team members to step up and take responsibility for their work. What am I missing?”
With the guidance of a confidential one-on-one coach, and Gotara’s neuroscience-based approach, Reddy focused on a 2-month outcome-based goal: Empower my team to produce high-quality deliverables independently. He was on a mission to unlock his team’s capabilities and reclaim his time for more strategic work.
With his coach’s help, he selected two skills: Develop and Deploy Team Goals and Master the Art of Delegation. He dedicated 15 minutes daily to learning these skills and immediately applied what he learned on the job. He worked closely with his coach for support and guidance all along the way.
The results? After just eight weeks, Reddy met his goal. His team is now more engaged, working toward clear targets aligned with the organization’s strategy and producing higher-quality work independently. Now, Reddy spends an additional hour a day coaching his team and works 75% less overtime!
