As an ex-pat kid—travelling from Italy, where she was born, to the UK and Belgium, Annalisa Gigante learned early on the importance of adapting to changing circumstances. It’s an innovative mindset that helped her excel while studying applied biology at Cambridge—and it’s the reason she’s been able to work with industrial designers to innovate around the shapes of perfume bottles for Hermes to developing soft grips on toothbrushes. Today she’s the Chief Innovation & Technology Officer at Bekaert, a tech leader in steel wire transformation and coating technologies. Past roles include heading up R&D at LafargeHolcim, and she’s on many boards and think tanks such as the Seed Fund and Technology Transfer Office and the Henry Royce Institute, which is the UK’s Agency for Advanced Materials Research and Innovation. She’s a noted speaker on innovation and leadership, and for this week’s TARATALK, she’ll explore the unique perspective that STEM women bring to leadership. “When you’re a leader you must understand where people are coming from because things get lost in translation,” explains Annalisa. ‘You must peel back the layers and piece the puzzle together. What’s driving the other person? Should you compromise or is there no need?” In her conversation with founder and CEO D.
