Dr. Fatima Abu Salem grew up with a father who encouraged her in mathematics. However, later in her career, she found out how isolating her chosen path of mathematics and computing was. As a result, she pivoted mid-career while staying true to herself and her love of mathematics. Mathematics is a great career path for Fatima, but she found that the environment was not always supportive or encouraging. So Fatima chose to take what life had given her and create her unique path to success. She is currently an associate professor of Computer Science at the American University of Beirut. She has an MS in pure Mathematics from AUB and a DPhil in Computing from the University of Oxford. Currently, she is involved in data science research for the public good.
